This can make it challenging to stay up to date with current events in real time (Digitalisering van het nieuws | Rathenau Instituut, z.d.). Online news consumption is on the rise. According to the 2021 Reuters Institute Digital News Report, 60% of European respondents used online sources for news in 2020, compared to 51% in 2016. However, while online news consumption is growing in Europe, traditional news resources such as radio, television and newspapers are still popular. In Europe, television remains the most popular source of news, with 74% of respondents getting their news from television in 2020, according to the same Reuters Institute report and also print newspapers are still widely consumed (47% of the respondents) The younger generations are more likely to consume news online. According to the same Reuters Institute Report, 71% of the European respondents aged 18-24 used online sources for news in 2020, compared to 50% of the respondents aged 55+. In Europe trust in online news sources is generally lower than the trust in traditional news sources. According to the 2021 Edelman Trust Barometer trust in traditional media sources such as television and newspapers is higher (62% of respondents) than trust in social media and online-only news sources (48%) in Europe. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the trend towards online news consumption. According to the above-mentioned Reuters Institute report 75% of the European respondents reported using online news sources during the pandemic, compared to 66% before the pandemic. In conclusion traditional news consumption offers greater rigor and reliability but may be less up to date than online sources. Ultimately, the choice between online news consumption and traditional news consumption depends on your personal preferences (which can depend on age) and needs. If you value convenience and a wide range of perspectives, online news sources may be the way to go. However, if you prefer a more traditional reading or viewing experience, you may prefer to stick with print newspapers or television broadcasts. You also must keep in mind that the best approach to news consumption is to use a variety of sources, both traditional and online, and to exercise critical thinking and discernment when evaluating the accuracy and reliability of news content (2021 Edelman Trust Barometer, z.d.). Conclusion: Good use of social media? Considering the above it can be concluded that social media has become a very important part of modern life. Not only it changed the way we communicate, connect and consume information, but it also transformed the way we consume news. As more and more people turn to social media for news, it is essential to understand how we can use these platforms in a good way. Social media can be an excellent tool for consuming news, but it is of the utmost importance to approach social media as a news source with a critical eye and following reputable sources, while not all sources on social media are trustworthy, and misinformation is rampant. This means checking the source of the information, looking for corroborating evidence, and being wary of sensational or emotionally charged content. It is crucial to verify any information before sharing or acting on it. To do this you can best use a variety of sources, both online and traditional. If people take this into account, they can stay up to date on breaking news and gain a more complete understanding of the issues they care about. But they always must keep in mind to stay critical when evaluating the accuracy and reliability of any news content.
