Project Number: 2022-1-ES01-KA220-HED-000089608 Critical Thinking for Active Participation in Society Critical Pedagogy Critical pedagogy is a philosophy of education and social movement that developed and applied concepts from critical theory and related traditions to the field of education and the study of culture (Kincheloe, J. and Steinburg, Sh., 1997). Critical pedagody insists that issues of social justice and democracy are not distinct from acts of teaching and learning (Giroux, 2007). Seal and Smith (2017) summarize the basic principles and goals of critical pedagogy as follows and illustrate them in the following figure. Principles of Critical Pedagogy ● Education is inherently political. ● Knowledge should relate to and develop from the lived experience of participants. ● Knowledge should be co-created between all participants in the learning process. Aims of Critical Pedagogy ● To develop critical thinkers who create new knowledge. ● For people to become aware of their, and others, oppressions and develop the will to act. ● For people to make connections between personal experiences and wider societal forces. Figure 1 . The principles, aims and approaches of critical pedagogy (Seal & Smith, 2021).
